121p. 2nd printing (1932) Cover smudged with corners worn. Embossed cover has a picture of a stern looking Tessie peering around an open door. Includes a 4 page leaflet entitled "Extracts from letters received from children and grown-ups who have read "Tessie.'" Scarce. The story is told as a letter from Tessie, a mutt with a docked tail. She recounts her life and explains pet behavior, especially the behavior of dogs and is meant to show that people should to be kind to pets as they are much more obedient and caring than children. Tessie accompanies her mother to look for food, leaving her brothers and sisters in the piano box in which they were born. Tessie wanders away from her mother, but is fortunate enough to be found by a man who likes dogs. Tessie is then adopted into a wonderful home in Brookline with a loving mistress and master and spends her summers with her family near the ocean. Chin, a chow, is her best friend who is comes by often to visit. 15 b&w plates show a number of Tessie's dog friends, who include a beagle, a bulldog, a spaniel, a terrier, a Chow, and a German shepherd. A decorated letter begins each chapter. [Jones; 1855] (7-3/8"x5-1/8")
