Unnumbered (approx. 36p.) Wraps and pages lightly creased and stain on top front. B&w halftone photographs. (9-5/8"x6-3/8" booklet, 10-3/4"x8-1/4" letter) Souvenir booklet of Maastricht, The Netherlands, the first Dutch city liberated from the Germans in September 1944. Dedication on front reads, "In a feeling of deep gratitude to its liberators, Maastricht dedicates this booklet to the American soldiers." Laid in is a letter from four Dutch families to the Whipples of Colorado. They thank the Whipples for their letter and indicate that the Whipples have thanked them for their hospitality to their son, Jim (James). They are most likely referring to James B. Whipple of Canon City, Colorado, born in 1920 and enlisted in 1942. The letter goes on to say that Jim was their guest for the wedding of one of the families' sons and enclosed photographs (which are not present). They thank the Whipples for their packages, which they call "like a present from Heaven." They conclude with an invitation to visit if the Whipples ever find themselves in Europe. A touching letter showing the connection between American and Dutch families in the aftermath of World War II.
